Video: Mathematics & Oceanography

How does mathematics inform our knowledge of the oceans? We travelled to Liverpool’s National Oceanographic Centre to understand more…

As part of our research for  Mathematics Gallery at the Science Museum we spent some time with the National Oceanographic Centre to learn about how oceanographers use mathematics in their work. We followed Les as he undertook his routine of monitoring the tidal gauges at Holyhead, as well as speaking to the guys in the NOC workshop about how they develop technology to provide the data mathematical models rely on. It was great to get a sense of the processes that contribute outside of the computer models as well as speaking to Chris & Liz about the implications their work has on people’s safety now and in the future.
